Reviews For This Wine

International Wine Cellar | 92

Good full ruby-red. Crushed blackberry, licorice and pepper on the high-toned, perfumed nose. Densely packed and vibrant, with captivating peppery lift to the intense dark fruit flavors. Finishes with substantial ripe tannins and excellent length. Seriously good zinfandel, from a site that winemaker Thomas Brown says benefits from cool years. These grapes were harvested in late October in 2010.

Another impressive wine, the 2010 Zinfandel has developed beautifully over the last year. Today, the 2010 is rich, dark and intense. The aromas are still very much primary, so readers who like complexity and nuance will have to let this sit in the cellar for another few years. Still, it is impressive. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2024.

Dense but rich and fleshy, showing bold black currant, crushed pepper and toasty vanilla aromas, with complex black cherry, mineral and black olive flavors that are wrapped in big but ripe tannins.

About This Producer

Howell Mountain provides a true "outpost" for these wines, with rocky soil, cool breeze, and a stunning view. At an altitude of 2,100 feet above the Napa Valley floor, owners Terry and Juli Pringle grow Zinfandel, Cabernet, Petit Sirah, and Grenache, all organically. The debut vintage was the 1998 100% Znfandel, which garnered a 93-point score from The Wine Spectator. Thomas Brown is the full time winemaker, and Ehren Jordan, winemaker at Turley Wine Cellars, consults. A second project, True Vineyard, debuts in 2008 with a Bordeaux blend estate wine.
