Vivid purple. Highly perfumed aromas of boysenberry and blueberry liqueur, with spice and potpourri notes adding complexity. Powerful but lively black and blue fruit flavors show excellent clarity and stain the palate. This wine has gained in elegance over the past year. The vibrant finish clings with outstanding tenacity.

2.2 ha, 100% Syrah. This wine is produced with grapes coming from Le Méal hillside (150- to 200-metres altitude). It takes its name from the old French word meaning 'the best’. This slope is composed of high terraces of shingles and clay. Vines are over 50 years old. Yields are again exceptionally low, at around 20 hl/ha.Deep crimson. Lightly scented and meaty on the nose. Almost more of an essence than a wine. Very introvert indeed with an enormous register of tannins brooding down below the ripe fruit. Embryonic. This wine has so much development to do… A bit severe for the moment. Very clean and fresh already though.

The 2009 Ermitage Le Meal tastes like blood of Syrah. This sensual, full-bodied, voluptuously textured wine is like putting bloody steaks in a Cuisinart and extracting the juice and then fermenting it. A magnificent, layered, multidimensional effort exhibiting copious notes of camphor, charcoal, roasted herbs, blackberries, cassis and grilled meats, it will easily last 40-50+ years.

This almost gushes with ripe plum, cassis, blackberry and black currant fruit, but stays harnessed, with spice-tinged grip, a tarry spine and a piercing cassis bush' and iron-inflected finish that will need cellaring to unfurl fully. 625 cases made.
