Classic aromas of blackcurrant, licorice, tobacco and spices. Highly concentrated, outsized and powerfully structured but seamless from the start, with lovely lift to its flavors of dark berries, licorice, minerals and brown spices. A step up in intensity from the 2008 but also considerably more tannic and masculine in style. Built for long aging, but I would not be surprised if this wine shut down in the bottle in the near future.

The 2009 Sloan possesses lots of espresso roast, chocolate fudge, baking spice, cedarwood, incense, creme de cassis, blackberry and subtle smoke characteristics. Surprisingly soft tannins are atypical for this vintage, but they work well and frame this full-bodied, concentrated, multidimensional wine. One of the finest Sloans made to date, it can be drunk now or cellared for 25-30 years.

About This Producer

Location alone is enough to draw attention to this wine - the vineyards are perched upon a picturesque hill above the renowned Auberge du Soleil - but the added value of having David Abreu plant the vineyards and Mark Aubert as the founding winemaker ties it all together into a package destined for stardom. The inaugural vintage, 2000, came out in 2004, with huge concentration, brilliant fruit integrity and a rich, complex character. The incredible structure of the Cabernet Sauvignon-based blend comes from the balanced integration of the exquisite 100% Rutherford estate fruit and the obsessive attention to detail in the vineyard and cellar. Martha McClellan is current winemaker, under whose guidance Sloan continues in the young tradition that earned it a 100-point score from Robert Parker for the 2002 vintage.
