The 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon M. Etain is dark, rich, sumptuous and highly expressive. A totally voluptuous wine, the 2009 flows across the palate with layers of dark fruit. Stylistically, the M. Etain is very close to the Scarecrow Cabernet in this vintage, although it has less aromatic complexity and depth. Hints of smoke, tobacco, incense and licorice are layered into the juicy, mid-weight finish. Anticipated maturity: 2013-2021.

Amazingly complex, firm, dense and concentrated, with a vivid, lively, structured mix of dried currant, mineral, cedar, sage and tobacco notes. Fills out nicely on the finish and holds its focus, ending with a satisfyingly chewy, rich bundle of dark berry fruit.

Great example of the Cohn Vineyard that can actually be drunk now. Ripe red fruits stand out and it is very well balanced. Think Scarecrow light.

Excellent wine. Not a plush fruit bomb, but much more subtle and complex. Outstanding

About This Producer

Sourced from the 60-year-old vines off Bret Lopez's JJ Cohn Vineyard in Rutherford, and made by Celia Welch, this wine became a legend in just three short years. The vines were planted in 1945 by JJ Cohn (Lopez's Grandfather) in response to neighbor and Inglenook Manager John Daniel's post-war behest to plant vines to service the coming demand. These original St. George-rooted, non-trellised "old men" continue to produce world-class fruit for world-class wine. Scarecrow is named after the character in The Wizard of Oz, as Cohn was Chief Production Executive at MGM pictures in the 1930s, when the movie was made. Lopez spent his summers as a boy at the vineyard and relishes the memories from that time. He and wife, Mimi Deblasio, reside in the original house at the vineyard.
