Bright ruby-red. Raspberry preserves, incense and lavender on the intensely perfumed nose. Juicy and broad on entry but tighter and more nervy in the mid-palate, offering vibrant red berry and candied cherry flavors along with hints of star anise and floral pastille. Lush but lively Gigondas with excellent back end-cut and persistence. Barruol told me that these vines average over 80 years of age.

I had the same issue with the 2009 Gigondas Valbelle, which had shown extremely well from barrel, but the hail damage seems to have given the wine a much more pinched, tannic and astringent side to it. There's plenty of concentration, some very pretty black fruits, licorice and truffle, but the tannins are coarse and the wine seems to suffer a bit from the tannins.

A gorgeous wine, with an interplay of ripe, dripping blackberry, cassis and plum sauce flavors providing the flesh, offset by smoldering charcoal, tobacco and bittersweet cocoa notes, which provide the angles. The long finish has nice intensity.

Rarely do I rate a wine higher than WS. This is one. This is a bold wine not for the feint hearted. It is extremely dark, almost black in the glass. Very deep body with damson, boysenberry and a hint of spice of Huckleberry and some cocoa. Silky smooth tannins that just flow through the mouth. The 2010 is rated higher but I find that hard to imagine.
