Wine Advocate Author: Lisa Perrotti-Brown Issue: 205

Deep garnet-purple in color, the 2009 Velvet Glove offers ripe and rich black cherry aromas that are very fragrant and youthful with accents of licorice and toast, marmite and blueberry pie. Very spicy, rich and full-bodied in the mouth, it has a bright acid line, medium-firm, grainy tannins and a long and voluptuous length on the finish. Drink it from 2014 to 2025+.

Polished, expressive, supple and velvety, glowing brightly with notes of blueberry and black and damson plum, with a panoply of sweet spices. All the flavors meld together with impressive integrity, persisting on the very long, complex finish. Most appealing is the deftness of the balance. 1,498 cases made.

Visual: inky black and dense. Extending to edges. Beads down the glass. Nose: vanilla, menthol and elusive smoky room that took a while to identify Palate: dark jammy fruit and tobacco. well balanced. High alcohol not evident on the palate. Finish is so long, that the wine can be easily enjoyed alone, over hours. Very luscious and rich, making it easy to savor slowly. This is a special occasion wine, not in the sense of expense, but in the unique richness. One bottle is too much for one person, and should be enough for 2-4 prior to moving on to the wine to be paired with the food. We decanted for an hour. This wine should continue to develop in complexity with time. Wine is still young and will be interesting to try again in a few years.
