Good medium red. Initially reduced aromas of musky coffee and oak turned to raspberry and spices with air. Savory and quite backward on the palate, with moderate flesh and strong mineral character to the black raspberry flavor. Became much more silky as it opened in the glass, but the firm, juicy, persistent finish shows a medicinal character that calls for at least a few years of aging. This should evolve gracefully.

The 2009 Morey St. Denis Les Chaffots shows the depth and richness of these old vines (planted in 1964) in its deep layers of black fruit. There is a baritone register here that is quite striking. The wine turns round and sweet, with notes of spices from the oak that frame the finish. This plot sits on the bottom portion of the vineyard just above Clos St. Denis.
