International Wine Cellar
Author: Josh Raynolds
Issue: Issue 160
Bright ruby. Ripe blackberry and cherry on the nose, with dark chocolate and licorice adding complexity. Deep, spice-accented cherry liqueur and bitter chocolate flavors are enlivened by a note of singed orange. Becomes brighter with air and finishes with excellent clarity, thrust and bite.

A sleeper of the vintage, the 2009 Chateauneuf du Pape is much less expensive than the other cuvees and represents a noteworthy buy. Classic kirsch liqueur, roasted Provencal herb and sandy, loamy soil characteristics are found in this dense, opulent, voluptuously textured wine that is on a much faster evolutionary track than the 2010. It should drink well for a decade.

Features perfumy aromatics, but still a bit tight, with an iron-bound core of cassis, raspberry and blackberry fruit, backed by graphite and black tea notes on the racy finish. Should unwind with modest cellaring.

God I'm in love with this wine. It's exotic, heady and incredibly complex. I'm getting raspberries, tobacco, currants, plums, lanolin(!), white pepper, cranberries, lavender, thyme and Herbes de Provence, and it's only two years old. Wow. Absolutely mind-blowing. Okay, it's final. I'm going to get more of this and lay it down for at least five years. Anything less would be infanticide.
