International Wine Cellar Author: Josh Raynolds Issue: Issue 157

Glass-staining ruby. Sexy, highly perfumed aromas of red and dark berry liqueur, cherry compote, potpourri, vanilla and Asian spices, along with a smoky quality and a touch of licorice. Stains the palate with deep raspberry and blackberry flavors lifted by juicy acidity and sharpened by a note of bitter orange marmalade. Seamless, sweet and very persistent on the finish, which strongly echoes the dark fruit and spice notes. Very impressive.

The 2009 Botanica surrenders greater aromatic complexity, is richer and more extracted than the Antica Terra cuvee, and has outstanding volume and length. This nicely proportioned Pinot Noir will benefit from 1-2 years of additional cellaring, an unusual characteristic for most 2009s.

purely domestic wine report Author: Doug Wilder

is sourced from Shea and Hagen Vineyards. It is a much bigger style of Pinot Noir (at 15% ABV). The nose of rich black cherry and violet lead to a spectacularly complex and engaging palate where the red and blue fruit are creamy, supple and evolve with air.

On the nose, its gorgeous earthy, sage brush, and even a bit dirty like a burgundy. But on the palate its nicely balanced, meduim bodied, and full of earth, wet forest floor, damp leaves, twigs, under brush, hints of dark cocoa covered cherries or cherry vanilla cola, a touch of caramel, and fresh picked herbs & spices. Utterly complex its keeps you digging for more. This wine may have changed my way of thinking about Oregon Pinot.
