(79% cabernet sauvignon, 11% cabernet franc, 8% petit verdot and 2% malbec): Moderately saturated ruby-red. Enticing aromas of dark berries, dark chocolate, cocoa powder, mint and spices. Showy and broad, but with an edge of acidity giving shape to the black raspberry and exotic brown spice flavors. Finishes with an herbal complexity and a firm tannic spine. Francoise Peschon (long-time winemaker for Araujo Estate) and Lisa Drinkward (the wife of Les Behrens) have been making this wine from the same vineyard source (the Blossom Creek vineyard north of Calistoga, which is under the same ownership as Turnbull Wine Cellars) since 2001.

The 2008 Cabernet Sauvignon Entre Deux Meres wraps around the palate with serious depth and power. Plums, mocha, espresso and spices all jump from the glass in this sexy, voluptuous wine. Round, sweet and inviting, the 2008 Entre Deux Meres captures the best qualities of the year. Although not super-complex, the 2008 is flat out delicious and incredibly appealing.

Deep ruby-purple. Medium-full body. 79% Cab, 11% Franc, 8% PV, 2% Malbec (I think.) Open for 4 hours. Aromas of black cherry, raspberry, cedar and mint. Nice smooth texture and good mouthfeel, this reminds me a little bit of an 80's Spottswoode from a very good vintage. The 11% Franc does a good job of getting some "oomph" in the middle without coming off "franc-ish." No heat at all, I think this came in at a moderate brix level, for Napa. Can be drunk now and should go well for a decade. A really nice wine and a very nice pricepoint. This is a wine about balance. Bravo!

About This Producer

Beginning with the 2000 vintage, Lisa Drinkward and Francoise Peschon, friends and mothers, began creating what was soon to become a major classic in the annals of Napa Valley startups. Both partners came in with excellent credentials - Drinkward, viticulturist at Behrens & Hitchcock (now known as Erna Schein), and Peschon, winemaker at Araujo (she recently transitioned to a consultant position there). Sourcing their fruit from small family-owned vineyards in Calistoga and producing no more than 500 cases, the pair dispels the myth that you need a sophisticated marketing plan and a fancy tasting room to compete in Napa Valley. If anything, their model is emulated more and more. Critics have been following it for a few years and there never seems to be enough to go around.
