Deep ruby. Sexy floral lift to the aromas of red fruits, iron, mocha and flowers. Concentrated and ripe yet silky on the attack, then strikingly deep in the middle, with lovely energy to the flavors of blueberry, cassis and graphite. This very rich, suave wine displays a fleshy mouthfeel and finishes very long and smoothly tannic. One of the my favorite wines of the vintage.

41% Merlot, 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 9% Cabernet Franc. Much deeper colour than La Mission 2008. Really powerful dark purple colour. Minerals and lightness of touch on the nose. The most solid red from this stable but a little muted at this stage. Very firm, even slightly austere Cabernet tannins and pretty drying on the finish. Far from opulent. Needs, like La Mission, to put on a bit of flesh. Medium persistence. Impressive purity of fruit - the opposite of tarted up.

This is profound! 2008 Haut-Brion: The extraordinary 2008 Haut-Brion is a candidate for -wine of the vintage.- Composed of 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 41% Merlot and 9% Cabernet Franc, it reveals more evolution and complexity in its large-scaled perfume. The dense purple color is followed by a sweet nose of creosote, asphalt, blueberries, black currants and jammy raspberries, sweet tannins, a savory, fleshy mouthfeel and a stunning finish. This incredibly pure, noble wine was produced from one of the estate-s smallest crops (only 7,000 cases produced versus the usual 12,000 cases). It should drink well for three decades or more.

This has racy acidity well-buried in the core of damson plum, cherry pit and red currant notes, all backed by fine-grained tannins and subtle sanguine and iron shadings. Tar and lilac hints chime in on the finish, where the appellation's typical tarry note shows some atypical polish. Impressive.

About This Producer

Since its founding in 1525, Chateau Haut-Brion has passed between many illustrious owners, including admirals, archbishops, and mayors of Bordeaux. In recent years, the estate has come under the ownership of Clarence Douglas Dillon, Ambassador of the United States in Paris and Minister of Finance under President John F. Kennedy, making it the only American-owned First Growth property. Currently, Dillon's granddaughter, the Duchesse de Mouchy, oversees Haut-Brion, among many others, under the public limited company of "Domaine Clarence Dillon."

Chateau Haut-Brion is also the only First Growth property from the 1855 Classification that lies outside of the Medoc and Sauternes. Located in Pessac, within the Graves region, just one mile from the city of Bordeaux, the wine of Chateau Haut-Brion is highly sought-after, landing it among the most expensive and prestigious wines in France. The estate vineyards, dominated by gravel and clay, are planted to both red and white varietals: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc; and Semillon and Sauvignon Blanc. Haut-Brion is characterized by earthy scents, ripe fruit, tobacco and mineral, revealing aromas of chocolate and smoke and creating an elegant and harmonious wine that is highly structured, allowing it to age seamlessly.
