Reviews For This Wine

Glass-staining purple-black. Very pure, complex merlot-dominated nose offers deep scents of plum, black cherry, smoke and minerals. Black cherry syrup and bay leaf flavors coat the palate, leaving a long and suave trail of flavor on the back. The still-youthful tannins are anything but shy but not so powerful that they would detract from the pleasure of drinking this wine after a couple years of cellaring. This solidly built Pavie-Macquin should go on in bottle for at least 15 or 20 years.

Consultants Nicolas Thienpont and Stephane Derenoncourt have produced a beautiful St.-Emilion that tastes like the quintessence of crushed rocks intermixed with blueberry, blackberry, black raspberry, licorice, camphor and truffle notes. This full-bodied effort should drink well in 4-5 years, and last for two decades or more. It achieved 14.5% natural alcohol.

Quite flattering, with ripe, almost showy fig, boysenberry and blackberry fruit layered with velvety tannins and backed by notes of anise and violet, which linger gently on the suave finish. Rather bright and defined for the vintage. A classy wine. 4,583 cases made.

Outstanding example of the vintage. Purple in color. Slow legs. Strawberry, Blackberry, Blueberry fruit combined with a stoney minerality. Full bodied with bright texture and a long finish. I won't touch this again for a few years.

About This Producer

Pavie-Macquin is a bio-dynamically farmed estate with a wealth of old vines from which to source fruit. Consequently, the wines are manifestations of incredible intensity and concentration balanced by an abundance of fruit purity, mineral and a healthy grip. The Macquin name comes from Albert Macquin, who in his time was an authority on the grafting European vines onto American rootstock after the phylloxera tragedy of the late 1800s. The current decade has brought Pavie-Macquin a dramatic surge in quality due to the expert intervention of Nicolas Thienpont (Vieux Chateau Certan), Michel Rolland and Stephane Derenoncourt. In the 2006 reclassification of St Emilion, it was promoted to the level of Premier Grand Cru Classe.
