(65% cabernet sauvignon, 23% cabernet franc, 9% merlot and 3% petit verdot; from iron-rich clay and rock soil similar to that of Dalla Valle): Red-ruby. Expressive aromas of raspberry, graphite, dried herbs and flowers. Lush, generous and rather forward, offering plenty of early sexy appeal. Finishes with broad, mouthcoating tannins and a firm spine of acidity. This may shut down in bottle but it's quite tasty today.

The 2008 Ovid (68% Cabernet Sauvignon, 23% Cabernet Franc, and the rest Merlot and Petit Verdot) is a slightly more restrained and marginally lighter version of the 2007. Still, it is a delicious, full-throttle, multi-dimensional wine, with loads of red, blue and black fruits and hints of camphor and graphite as well as forest floor notes in a medium-bodied, restrained, but impressively authoritative style to drink over the next 15 or more years.

Rich and fleshy, with ripe plum, wild berry, mineral, cedar and anise flavors. Medium- to full-bodied, graceful and elegant, ending with a delicate aftertaste and a firm, minerally finish. Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Petit Verdot

purely domestic wine report | 96

In the nose, I find hints of lemon sage, mineral, black currant and elderberry along with crushedanise seed and toast. In the mouth, there is tremendous structure that leaves an impression of a massive, cohesive, polished, slippery orb of seamless, loamy black fruits, spicy sandalwood with firm yet beautifully rounded, sculpted tannins.
