(100% cabernet sauvignon): Full ruby-red. Pungent aromas of black cherry, blueberry, minerals, mocha and menthol, lifted by a violet topnote. Fairly large-scaled for this bottling but with lovely balance and precision, not to mention considerable sex appeal. The rising, floral finish features broad, suave tannins and excellent persistence. A terrific showing.

The 2008 J. Daniel Cuvee (also 100% Cabernet Sauvignon) is slightly more restrained, without the full throttle aromatics and richness of the 2007. Nevertheless, it offers impressive concentration and purity in addition to plenty of licorice and roasted herb-infused black currant fruit and subtle smoky oak in the background.

purely domestic wine report | 92

I find a deep, saturated nose of blackberry, graphite, licorice, carbon, camphor, olive and violet. The palate has a pretty racy black fruit and licorice feel, with solid tannins. Needs some time.

About This Producer

Founded by John and Robin Lail and made by Philippe Melka, the Lail winery has for years specialized in producing the John Daniel Cuvee. This wine is sourced from Robin's vineyard, named for her father, who was the general manager of Inglenook in the 1940s, and was the great nephew of Gustave Niebaum, Inglenook's 19th century founder. A recent addition to the lineup has been a Cabernet Sauvignon and a Sauvignon Blanc under the Blueprint label, recognizing John's architecture business.
