($45; 48% cabernet sauvignon, 28% syrah and 24% petit verdot; 15.5% alcohol) Inky purple. An explosively perfumed bouquet displays scents of blackberry, violet, rose and incense, with a strong note of smoky Indian spices. Open-knit, sappy dark fruit flavors show no rough edges and pick up notes of licorice and mint with air. Alluringly silky on the finish, which repeats the floral and spice notes.

The 2008 Optimus, a blend of 48% Cabernet Sauvignon, 28% Syrah, and 24% Petit Verdot, plays it close to the vest. Graphite, espresso, chocolate, and black currant notes slowly emerge from the glass of this dense ruby/purple-colored wine. In the mouth, it is an elegant, medium-bodied effort rather than the broad, blockbuster style of past vintages. Fruity, pure, and impeccably well-made, it should age effortlessly for 10-12 years.

Big fan of this! Beautiful dark ruby with a deep core and magenta on the rim. Intense nose that is extremely inviting. Aromas include blackberry, floral notes and smoke. The body is medium plus, the wine is round and the tannins are fine to silky. There is dark ripe fruit with plum and an almost a syrup quality. Anise, tar and some crushed leaves on the finish. Very concentrated.

About This Producer

Stephan Asseo's adventure began in 1982 with a winemaking education from L'Ecole Oenologique de Macon in Bugundy and the subsequent establishment of a small empire in Bordeaux, including Chateau Fleur Cardinal. With a true desire to be more innovative than the French AOC law would allow, Asseo gained a reputation as a maverick vigneron and set out a world wide quest for great terroir.

After searching for over a year, the St. Emilion native fell in love with the unique terroir of Paso Robles and built L'Aventure Winery to pursue his ideals as a winemaker. L'Aventure's flagship Estate Cuvee (a blend of Cabernet and Syrah) has incredible track record 94-98 point scores each vintage since 2002. Robert Parker has reported that Asseo "continues to go from strength to strength, producing a fabulous portfolio of wines that makes L'Aventure one of the bright, shining reference points for the region. This is one of the California Central Coast superstars, and the wines are worth every cent."
