($85; 50% syrah, 36% cabernet sauvignon and 14% petit verdot; 15.9% alcohol) Inky purple. Cassis, blueberry and smoky Indian spices on the expansive, heady nose, with a sexy floral quality that gains strength with air. Deep, sappy and palate-coating dark fruit compote flavors show unlikely energy and become spicier with air. Strikingly expressive, potent and compellingly fragrant wine that finishes with remarkable clarity and sweet persistence. This was raised in 100% new French oak, but I'd never have guessed it.

The finest 2008 I tasted is the 2008 Estate Cuvee, a blend of 50% Syrah, 36% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 14% Petit Verdot. Mocha, fudge, blackberry, graphite, cassis, and smoky barbecue scents jump from the glass of this dense purple-colored 2008. Full-bodied, rich, textured, and layered, this terrific effort is surprisingly soft and accessible.

About This Producer

Stephan Asseo's adventure began in 1982 with a winemaking education from L'Ecole Oenologique de Macon in Bugundy and the subsequent establishment of a small empire in Bordeaux, including Chateau Fleur Cardinal. With a true desire to be more innovative than the French AOC law would allow, Asseo gained a reputation as a maverick vigneron and set out a world wide quest for great terroir.

After searching for over a year, the St. Emilion native fell in love with the unique terroir of Paso Robles and built L'Aventure Winery to pursue his ideals as a winemaker. L'Aventure's flagship Estate Cuvee (a blend of Cabernet and Syrah) has incredible track record 94-98 point scores each vintage since 2002. Robert Parker has reported that Asseo "continues to go from strength to strength, producing a fabulous portfolio of wines that makes L'Aventure one of the bright, shining reference points for the region. This is one of the California Central Coast superstars, and the wines are worth every cent."
