($45) Opaque ruby with a bright rim. A drop-dead sexy bouquet of red and dark berry scents, with complicating notes of Asian spices, patchouli and dried violet. Sweet black raspberry and mulberry flavors provide excellent palate coverage and pick up notes of olive tapenade and candied flowers with aeration. Some fine-grained tannins creep in on the spice-dominated finish but are quickly absorbed by the lush fruit. Still quite primary and in need of patience-say four more years or so.

The 2008 Syrah GarysâÂ?Â? VineyardâÂ?Â?s dense purple color is followed by aromas of sweet camphor, blackberries, cassis, licorice, pepper, and olives. Aged completely in neutral wood, it is an opulent, fleshy wine that should drink well for 6-8 years.
