International Wine Cellar Author: Stephen Tanzer Issue: Issue 153

($35; a Bordeaux blend based on 72% cabernet sauvignon) Bright ruby-red. Expressive, slightly liqueur-like aromas of currant, cocoa powder and flowers. Supple, silky and sweet, with an enticing floral quality providing lift to the seamless palate. A lovely plump, fruity, slightly high-toned blend with plenty of sexy Taransaud oak showing. Will make delicious early drinking.

The 2007 Red Wine is composed of 72% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot, with the balance Cabernet Franc and Malbec. As always, it is a great value offering a fragrant, already complex nose of confiture of black fruits, incense, and Asian spices. On the palate it is savory and elegant with a plush texture. It is likely to evolve for several years but there is no compelling reason to defer gratification.

Firm, with a light grip of tannins around a core of dark berry, currant, smoke and tobacco flavors. This has elegance and depth, with a welcome sense of reticence that doesn't push the flavors too strong. Finishes very long, with a silky texture.

Tasted alongside the 2006 CV Red; this was the unanimous favorite. Lusher and better balanced, this made the 06 seem a little austere. Will try more time on the 06; the 07 is ready to drink.

Good, but a little bit one-dimensional. Nice flavor and pleasant fruit and texture. Not as good as I thought last time.
