Good deep red. Aromas of black cherry, black tea and a spicy hint of chocolate. Tactile and dense but with a light touch considering its 15.8% alcohol, showing lovely lift to its dark berry, spice and saline soil tones. There's a brooding quality to this pinot's dark fruit flavors, but its pliant texture and early sweetness and personality should give it more immediate appeal than the Rueling bottling. Finishes with ripe tannins, a slight suggestion of warmth and sneaky length.

The 2007 Pinot Noir UV Vineyard (equal parts Calera and the suitcase Vosne-Romanee clones) smells of damp earth, freshly cut flowers, black raspberries, sweet cherries, and subtle hints of roasted meats and smoke. Deep, rich, full-bodied, concentrated, and moderately tannic, it is more structured than the Reuling Vineyard.

Spicy baked cherry pie, plum and wild berry aromas turn elegant and refined. Full-bodied, but not weighty, allowing the rich flavors to dance on the palate. Ends with a long, lingering finish.

About This Producer

Mark Aubert's four Sonoma Coast vineyard-designate Chardonnays - Lauren, Reuling, Quarry and Ritchie - have risen to cult status at a dizzying speed. Production is a limited 4,000 cases and the wines are available via the winery's mailing list. Aubert's career in winemaking reads like a fantasy, with his 1989 start as assistant winemaker at Peter Michael under the tutelage of Helen Turley, to his time at Colgin and Bryant Family. His eponymous wines are exemplary renditions of Chardonnay, replete with the rich bounty of the terroirs from which he sources the fruit. At the same time, they reflect his adept oenological hand, and maintain a focused balance of flavor and purity.

Aubert also makes several Pinot Noirs sourced from the Sonoma Coast as well as a "right-bank" Bordeaux style blend from Napa's Howell Mountain.
