($225) Deep ruby-red. Serious, youthfully medicinal nose combines blackberry, licorice pastille, graphite, violet and fruity bitter chocolate. Intensely flavored and deep if youthfully imploded, with terrific verve to its flavors of cassis, minerals and bitter chocolate. Quite backward but already hinting at the sweetness to come. The wine's vibrant acidity, superb intensity and serious tannic clout give it the components for a long and slow evolution in bottle. An outstanding vintage for this wine.

Pure creme de cassis, black cherry, wood spice, crushed rock, and subtle oak characteristics are present in this dark ruby/purple-colored 2007 Cabernet Sauvignon. This is another 2007 that shows abundant minerality, something I have detected in many Napa 2007 Cabernet Sauvignons. This youthful effort will benefit from 3-5 years of cellaring, and should evolve for 25+ years.

$325. Deep dark red color. Muted nose. Very tannic but nice fruit on palate. Long finish. Needs a lot more time to age and mellow out tannin profile.

About This Producer

In 1976, former stockbroker Dick Grace, along with his wife Ann and their children began growing Cabernet Sauvignon from their eponymous vineyard in St. Helena initially just as a hobby. With their first harvest sold to Caymus and subsequently bottled as one of the first single vineyard designated wines in Napa, they embarked upon the path to becoming one of America's wine legends. Besides maintaining the high reputation of their own vineyard and wines, the Graces have contributed to the development of many others, formerly employing Heidi Barrett, and providing budwood for Hartwell Estate, Vineyard 29, and Blank Family Vineyards. With limited production of and unrelenting demand for their wines, they also pioneered the mailing list/waiting list sales model prevalent among many cult cab producers today.
