($150; 92% petit verdot with 8% cabernet franc-a blend much higher in petit verdot than the barrel sample presented to me a year ago) Good deep red. Fresh, new-oaky aroma of blackberry and licorice. Much more closed and medicinal than the flagship blend, but with a similar floral quality in the mouth. This is tougher and less expressive today but not at all heavy for all its breadth. Rather powerful acidity currently accentuates the wine's tannins, which coat the teeth. Finishes with a note of bitter chocolate. This actually boasts very good balance and depth for petit verdot but will require patience.

About This Producer

VIADER is a leading Napa Valley winery estate established in 1986 by Delia Viader, and recognized for consistently producing high quality red wines. The estate is located 1200 feet above the Napa Valley floor just north-east of St. Helena on the steep, rocky slopes of Howell Mountain.

Since its inaugural vintage in 1989, the VIADER Proprietary blend has featured Cabernet Sauvignon with a significant component of Cabernet Franc. The second lable "V" is exclusively Petit Verdot. The estate VIADER Syrah is a blend of Barossa and Hermitage clones. DARE by Viader focuses on single varieties from select vineyards in the Napa Valley blended with their estate fruit. DARE Cabernet Sauvignon features fruit sourced from Lewelling Vineyards in St. Helena. DARE Cabernet Franc uses fruit from Stagecoach Vineyards in Oakville. DARE Tempranillo is made from a Ribera del Duero clonal selection sourced from the northeast side of the Napa Valley. VIADER also produces a very limited amount of Cabernet-based dry DARE Rose.
