International Wine Cellar
Author: Stephen Tanzer
Issue: Issue 144
($38) Bright ruby-red. Vibrant, high-toned aromas of musky blackberry and pepper, with a whiff of exotic fruits. Juicy and firm in the mouth, with pliant black cherry and black pepper flavors complicated by notes of mushroom and earth along with an exotic suggestion of apricot pit. Finishes firmly tannic and long. A rather brisk style-and at the low end of the alcohol range among these '07s, at a mere 15.5%.

From another old vine site from Contra Costa (planted in 1896), the 2007 Zinfandel Salvador Vineyard represents the first of a group of wines that had not yet been bottled. More tart acidity is noticeable than in the other Contra Costa single vineyard wine, Duarte. It also shows briery, black raspberry, and cherry fruit intermixed with soil, underbrush, and pepper undertones. It should drink nicely for 5-6 years.
