($38) Saturated ruby to the rim. Knockout nose combines crushed berries, pepper and roasted meat, all lifted by an exotic whiff of peach pit. Penetrating acidity gives this a youthful toughness today, with the dark berry liqueur flavors perked up by captivating white fruit notes (no doubt due to a bit of viognier in the blend). The rather powerful tannins call for several years of aging. This splendid petite sirah (spelled "syrah" on the label) may ultimately merit an even higher score but it's tough going today.

Turley's Petite Syrahs are about as good as they get. The 2007 Petite Syrah Turley Estate is made from a clone that was taken from the Hayne Vineyard. It exhibits an inky/purple color as well as an extraordinary bouquet of incense, blueberry and blackberry liqueur, spring flowers, and wet stones. It is a dense, full-bodied, enormously endowed red that is best forgotten for 5-6 years, then drunk over the following three decades.
