Bright purple. Wilder and more masculine than the Sasha, offering scents and flavors of blackcurrant, bitter cherry, candied violet and licorice, along with a smoky overtone. While the Sasha has a vaguely pinot aspect, this is all syrah. Deep and chewy in the middle and on the impressively long finish, where the violet and smoke notes echo.

About This Producer

Quiet, deliberate brilliance is a good way to describe Fred Scherrer and his wines. While winemaker for ten years at Dehlinger, he learned that the success in winemaking revolves around the vineyard. He began making wine from grapes grown on his father's property in Alexander Valley in 1991 and opened Scherrer in 1997. He produces Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Zinfandel and Vin Gris from Pinot Noir and Zinfandel.
