($225) Bright medium ruby. Strongly mineral aromas of black raspberry, cassis, dark chocolate, licorice and menthol, plus a whiff of Rutherford dust. Then silky, sexy and concentrated, with compelling inner-mouth perfume to the red and black fruit flavors complicated by loam and minerals. Very light on its feet. There's an essentially gentle character to this wine but also sneaky intensity, excellent grip and a serious spine for aging. The very rich, mineral-driven finish offers substantial but utterly sweet tannins and lovely lingering perfume. There's very little raisining at this site in Rutherford as the fairly rich soils have good moisture-holding capacity and the hills to the west block the late-afternoon sun. A beauty now, but it would be a shame not to give this some time to blossom in the bottle.

Very deep dark red color. Really intriguing nose: great fruit and spice notes. Many layers. Good medium to strong tannin and fruit level. Silky smooth, very round on palate. Long finish. $225 on release.

About This Producer

Sourced from the 60-year-old vines off Bret Lopez's JJ Cohn Vineyard in Rutherford, and made by Celia Welch, this wine became a legend in just three short years. The vines were planted in 1945 by JJ Cohn (Lopez's Grandfather) in response to neighbor and Inglenook Manager John Daniel's post-war behest to plant vines to service the coming demand. These original St. George-rooted, non-trellised "old men" continue to produce world-class fruit for world-class wine. Scarecrow is named after the character in The Wizard of Oz, as Cohn was Chief Production Executive at MGM pictures in the 1930s, when the movie was made. Lopez spent his summers as a boy at the vineyard and relishes the memories from that time. He and wife, Mimi Deblasio, reside in the original house at the vineyard.
