Opaque ruby. Potent dark berry and cherry scents are complicated by notes of licorice, smoked meat, violet and fruitcake. Lush, spicy and energetic, offering sweet dark fruit flavors and a refreshing hint of bitter cherry. Seamless and alluringly sweet, with strong finishing lift and outstanding clarity. You could easily enjoy this sexy wine right now.

Just as good, the 2007 Cote a Cote starts out tight and reserved, but blossoms with time in the glass, showing incredibly pure creme de cassis, black cherry, licorice and spice-driven aromas and flavors. These all flow to a full-bodied, deep, rich and layered profile on the palate that carries beautiful concentration, excellent overall purity and freshness, and a blockbuster finish. Still youthful and vibrant, with obvious structure, I think there's some upside here, and when all is said and done, it will have upward of two decades or more of total longevity.

A ripe, racy style, pushing the flavors to the edge of raspberry balsamic, yet this is still fresh, vibrant and lively, with excellent acidity and range of flavors, extending from mineral to dried berry, black tea, black licorice and crushed rock. Grenache, Mourvèdre and Syrah. 800 cases made

The second wine of the Paso Robles tasting; weaker mild palate but elegant and improved over several hours. Need decanting. Long life.

About This Producer

Stephan Asseo's adventure began in 1982 with a winemaking education from L'Ecole Oenologique de Macon in Bugundy and the subsequent establishment of a small empire in Bordeaux, including Chateau Fleur Cardinal. With a true desire to be more innovative than the French AOC law would allow, Asseo gained a reputation as a maverick vigneron and set out a world wide quest for great terroir.

After searching for over a year, the St. Emilion native fell in love with the unique terroir of Paso Robles and built L'Aventure Winery to pursue his ideals as a winemaker. L'Aventure's flagship Estate Cuvee (a blend of Cabernet and Syrah) has incredible track record 94-98 point scores each vintage since 2002. Robert Parker has reported that Asseo "continues to go from strength to strength, producing a fabulous portfolio of wines that makes L'Aventure one of the bright, shining reference points for the region. This is one of the California Central Coast superstars, and the wines are worth every cent."
