($60; all Pommard clone) Vivid red. Complex scents of redcurrant, cherry, smoky herbs and potpourri; smells like a top-notch wine from Morey-Saint-Denis. Fleshy red fruit flavors are sharpened by zesty mineral and spice qualities and gain power on the back end. Changed a lot in the glass, developing dark berry and cola notes on the long, sappy finish. This wine would also benefit from decanting, or age. (JR)

About This Producer

In the "Deep End" of the Anderson Valley, the Green family has developed Kite's Rest Vineyard, a 12-acre site set among the native redwoods. The vineyard, planted to Pinot Noir, is divided into 3 distinct blocks, which are handled, fermented, and bottled in block-designated bottlings. A general vineyard blend is also produced. Winemaker at Black Kite is twenty-five year wine industry veteran Jeff Gaffner, who also produces his family's own label, Saxon Brown.
