($45) Deep red. Deep, nuanced nose offers raspberry, cherry and candied plum, with complicating floral and herbal qualities. Silky and sweet, with energetic red and dark berry flavors. Supple tannins add shape and grip. Finishes with excellent sweetness and clarity, repeating the sweet red fruit qualities.

The 2006 Syrah Brosseau, from those granite soils, is a great Syrah. Fifty-percent whole clusters were used by Wells Guthrie during the fermentation, but the wine does not have a touch of stemminess. However, they do seem to give this wine some structure and definition. This is a big wine with distinctive minerality and plenty of black and dark red fruits that are ripe but restrained. Hints of truffle, meat juices, and tapenade are also present in this beautiful wine, which is full-bodied and should drink nicely for 7-8 years.
