($180; 60% grenache and 20% each of mourvedre and syrah) Inky ruby. Alluring perfume of red and dark berries, cinnamon, incense and fresh flowers. Lush, creamy and sweet, offering palate-coating dark berry flavors and a sweet lavender pastille quality. Expands and gains depth and energy on the finish, leaving behind zesty cherry and berry skin and bitter chocolate notes. Extremely impressive and built to age.

Bright crimson. Very heady – the first wine that really sings of the garrigue. Spicy too – most mulled wine in its flavours! Definite cinnamon there… Lots of effort here. Lovely tannins – so ripe yet present, Very rich and flattering.

The opaque ruby/purple-tinged 2006 Chateauneuf du Pape Le Clos du Caillou Reserve is layered, ample, and full-bodied. The strongest and most complete wine of this group, it is a blend of 60% Grenache, 30% Mourvedre, and 10% Syrah (the latter component is aged in new demi-muids). Reminiscent of the brilliant 1999 Clos du Caillou, it is elegant, rich, and full-bodied with intense fruit, crisp acidity, and beautiful length as well as power. Enjoy it over the next 15 or more years.

Really packed but supersilky, with a gorgeous beam of raspberry ganache gliding over super fine-grained tannins, while notes of incense, blackberry preserve, bittersweet chocolate truffle and black tea fill in the background. Seamless and very long.
