Reviews For This Wine

International Wine Cellar | 97

(($500) Full medium ruby. Subdued but pure and vibrant nose offers black raspberry, minerals, licorice and truffle, all lifted by an ineffable perfume that carries through on the palate. Boasts terrific definition and energy; following the group of Bond offerings from '06, this tasted like a wine from another vintage. Very intensely flavored but wonderfully refined wine, with a light touch to its slowly mounting, highly complex flavors of dark fruits, spices, minerals, tobacco and spices. A wine of great finesse, finishing with superb tannins and outstanding lift. This wine has been a knockout from the outset.

The 2006 Harlan Estate has turned out better than I originally predicted. Its dense ruby/purple color is followed by classic aromas of creme de cassis, melted licorice, smoked meats, burning embers, and graphite. It has thrown off some of the tannic clout it displayed last year, revealing great balance. A candidate for "wine of the vintage," this dense, full-bodied effort has 25+ years of life ahead of it.

Tight and complex, with a dry, earthy mineral edge to the red currant and black cherry fruit, but this slowly unwinds, revealing greater depth and concentration and ending with a long, persistent finish. Quite tannic, but the flavors push through on the finish. To be released spring 2010.

Dense and concentrated, with firm dried currant, berry, mineral, graphite and cedary oak flavors that are just beginning to unfold.--Non-blind Harlan retrospective (2010). Drink now through 2030. 2,119 cases made

Dark red/deep purple color. Wonderful powerful nose: lots of fruit but with multiple layers underneath and nice spice notes. Beautiful texture on palate, nice strong tannin with good amount of fruit. Strong, long finish.

About This Producer

Harlan Estate, owned by Bill Harlan, is located in the western hills of Oakville. Harlan is known for its commitment to creating a wine that is a California "First Growth," on par with those of the old world. The entire estate consists of 240 acres, including a homestead and plantings of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. Consulting oenologist Michel Rolland and winemaker Bob Levy lead the production of Harlan's wines, producing two Bordeaux-style blends: Harlan Estate's namesake proprietary red and "The Maiden." These wines have been received to great acclaim by reviewers and collectors alike, commanding high prices and a competitive waiting list. Both wines are complex, full-bodied and have the ability to age for decades. With an opulent style, rich with dense fruit and elements of black currant, spice, and minerals, Harlan is both graceful and elegant, ranking it among the top tier of California Cabernet producers.
