($38) Ruby-red. A complex bouquet displays cherry-cola, licorice, smoked meat and cracked pepper. Deeply concentrated dark berry flavors are firmed by chunky tannins and become spicier on the back end. The black fruit lingers on the long, assertive, slightly wild finish. This big, chewy wine needs a hunk of grilled meat to tame it. (JR)

Slightly better than the 2006 Syrah Parmalee-Hill "Camp Block", with no herbaceousness, is the 2006 Syrah Parmalee-Hill "Owl Box Block." This wine displays sweet black currant fruit, a hint of minerality, some raspberries as well as cherries, an elegant mouthfeel, medium body, and good freshness and length. If the "Camp Block" is more Crozes-Hermitage, the "Owl Box Block" is more St.-Joseph-like.

Love the olive tapenade notes in this wine.
