($35) Good dark red. Knockout perfumed nose combines raspberry, smoked meat, pepper and olive tapenade-like a blend of Chateauneuf du Pape and Bandol. Then juicy and intense in the mouth, with lovely energy and thrust to the flavors of raspberry, pepper and spice. Sexy, penetrating wine, finishing with firm tannic spine and excellent length.

Needs time...unlike any other Cali Grenache I've had...nice smokey funk...really came together on night 2.

About This Producer

Rudius is the ancient Roman word for a wooden sword that was used by soldiers and gladiators during their training. Traditionally, a rudius was given to gladiators when they had won their freedom from the arena. Winemaker Jeff Ames views his own project as freedom to pursue his style of winemaking, after working on other labels over the past years. Ames focuses on Grenache and Syrah from Russian River. Production is under 200 cases each.
