($85; includes 2.5% each cabernet franc and merlot) Good bright medium ruby. Musky, ripe, complex aromas of plum syrup, smoke, licorice, tobacco leaf and chocolate, all lifted by a strong rocky element. Suave on entry, then silky, perfumed and vibrant in the middle palate, with black fruit flavors lifted by a wet stone minerality and a floral element. Wonderfully silky and sophisticated wine, finishing with very suave tannins. From a vineyard planted on pure fractured rock at an altitude of 1,800 feet.

From a 9-acre parcel, the full-bodied 2006 Cabernet Sauvignon True Vineyard includes some Cabernet Franc and Merlot in the blend. It reveals a floral cocktail-like bouquet intermixed with lead pencil shavings, blue and black fruits, good freshness, and laser-like focus. A powerful, rich, layered effort, it ranks a few notches above their regular offering. It should evolve for two decades.

Infanticide, I know, but needed to check in. Gorgeous nose of blue/black fruits and flowers (classic mountain nose, really), palate is a wall of tannin right now. Left 3/4 bottle for day 2. On day 2 the tannin was still very much there but the fruit was intense and pure. Decent acidity too. This is a great wine in the making but it needs serious time. Will try the regular bottling soon for comparison. 95 based on potential.

About This Producer


Howell Mountain provides a true "outpost" for these wines, with rocky soil, cool breeze, and a stunning view. At an altitude of 2,100 feet above the Napa Valley floor, owners Terry and Juli Pringle grow Zinfandel, Cabernet, Petit Sirah, and Grenache, all organically. The debut vintage was the 1998 100% Znfandel, which garnered a 93-point score from The Wine Spectator. Thomas Brown is the full time winemaker, and Ehren Jordan, winemaker at Turley Wine Cellars, consults. A second project, True Vineyard, debuts in 2008 with a Bordeaux blend estate wine.
