It is fascinating to taste the 2006 Le Serre Nuove (magnum), the second wine of Ornellaia, in this setting, as it shows quite well, especially next to some of the Ornellaias from smaller vintages. Le Serre Nuove is naturally made to be more accessible than Ornellaia and contains a higher percentage of Merlot, which gives it a touch more roundness. The fleshy, generous 2006 Le Serre Nuove offers terrific balance in an enveloping, warm expression of this important vintage. I have little doubt that current vintages of Le Serre Nuove are actually better wines than the early vintages of Ornellaia, which highlights how much viticulture and oenology have developed here over the last 20+ years. The 2006 Le Serre Nuove is 50% Merlot, 35% Cabernet Sauvignon, 9% Cabernet Franc and 6% Petit Verdot. The estate employs shorter fermentation and maceration times lasting 10-15 days and gives the wine 15 months in French oak, 25% new.

Fresh, focused aromas of blackberry and cherry lead to a medium body, with silky tannins and a currant, berry and tobacco aftertaste. Subtle and delicious already. Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot.

Definitely an old world style wine. Taut, with plums, dark cherry and some blueberry. Medium to full bodied with tannins still slightly grippy but not overbearing.

This wine is still young but notes of Violet, tomato jam, tobacco and spice box are abundant. The Tannin is a little firm but smooth with a lovely finish of cherry and cassis

Slow legs, a subtle ruby color with strong aromas of strawberry, ripe cherry and some heat in the chest from the alcohol. On tasting, more red and dark berries in a very fruit forward presentation, followed by some licorice and cassis, a mouthwatering sensation, very structured tannins, and a long finish. This wine will benefit from a few years in the cellar.

It tastes like a Barolo! But it's more dense, fruitier. Otherwise flavours of tobacco and herbs. Nice one. Still young.

About This Producer

A premiere estate located in Tuscany's Bolgheri coast, Tenuta dell'Ornellaia produces the renowned Merlot-based blends Masseto, Ornellaia, Le Serre Nuove, and Le Volte. The unique microclimate and combination of clay in the soil eventually proved ideal, epitomized by the 2001 Masseto, which garnered 100 points from the Wine Spectator. The pinnacle achievement at Ornellaia, the Masseto has developed a cult following for its limited allocation.

Ornellaia, a Cabernet, Merlot, Cabernet Franc blend which debuted in 1985, is the estate's signature wine. Le Serre Nuove, which requires less aging and displays a more fruit forward style, is something of a "second wine" and joins Le Volte, a Sangiovese, Cabernet, Merlot blend, as wines at a younger age.
