International Wine Cellar | 90

($95) Dark red-ruby. Superripe but vibrant aromas of redcurrant, mocha, minerals and tobacco. Sweet, silky and seamless but not thick, thanks to a medicinal menthol quality that lifts the dark fruit and bitter chocolate flavors. This boasts very good energy and length, finishing with dusty, ripe tannins.

Starting with the Matriarch, this wine is the easiest to drink young. Dark plum/purple, with plenty of smoke, black currants, espresso roast, oak, and chocolate, the 2006 is dense, round, and best drunk over the next decade.

Delicious, pure, rich and structured, with ripe cherry, plum, blackberry, mineral, anise and sage flavors that gain weight and depth. Full-bodied and firmly tannic, ending on a pleasant earthy note.

Not quite sure about this wine. Great nose, but very tannic (my tongue still feels fuzzy). Hard to get past the tannins to taste the wine, but it did soften with time and air. I will try decanting my last bottle for a couple hours before I drink it.

$105. Big nose of dark fruits. Nice on palate, very lush, still a lot of tannin but pleasant and will only get better with age. Long finish. David Abreu, Bob Levy.

About This Producer

In his ongoing quest to produce world class wine in the tradition of 1st Growth Bordeaux, Bill Harlan - of Harlan Estate fame - started Bond to create single vineyard wines from sources meeting his high growing standards. Winemaker Robert Levy produces five vineyard designate wines: Melbury, St. Eden, Vecina, Pluribus and Quella, as well as a blend called The Matriarch. Levy's goal is for each wine to take on the unique expression of its vineyard site and Bill Harlan's ultimate plan is to produce wines from a total of 6 unique vineyards. The wines are known for their lush, deeply concentrated flavors, and their elegance and finesse, which Bill and Robert feel define them as the "Grand Crus" of Napa. Fewer than 1,500 cases of the Matriarch, and between 400 and 700 cases of the vineyard designates are produced annually.
