Reviews For This Wine

International Wine Cellar | 91

($75; bottled in June of 2008) More exotic and more tropical on the nose than the 2007, hinting at butterscotch and honeyed high tones. Fat and sweet, but with a slightly bitter edge to its honeyed flavor. Less fleshy and fruity than the 2007, and currently conveying less minerality too. Not showing the fruit it displayed from barrel a year ago: is this in a dumb stage?

The 2006 Chardonnay reveals brawny orange marmalade, white peach, and popcorn notes with notions of oak and damp earth in the background. Drink it over the next several years as I am suspect of the aging potential of these Chardonnays.

Full body of ripe peach and papaya flavors, hints of cinnamon, pear - exotic rather than classic. Heavy on the finish, yet lively and cleansing. Light gold rich color and a nose of vanilla bean. Definitely an attention grabber. Cheers!

About This Producer

Fifth-generation Napa natives John and Maggy Kongsgaard produce The Judge, Chardonnay, VioRous, Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon. Low yielding vineyards and traditional low-intervention winemaking techniques produce powerful, graceful wines which are high intensity expressions of vineyard and variety.

The core of their endeavor is the ten-acre vineyard they planted in the late 1970s on a rocky hilltop in southern Napa Valley which has belonged to the Kongsgaard family since the 1920s. In addition to these family acres, they direct the farming under long-term contract on another seven acres in Carneros and three acres near St. Helena. The winery, on the eastern rim of Napa Valley, is a cave drilled into the volcanic rock. Production is limited to what they can make with their own hands.
