($195; 14.1% alcohol; a selection of the most structured lots of merlot) Bright medium ruby. Captivating, slightly exotic aromas of blackberry, lavender, dark chocolate and road tar. Sweet, broad and lush, with a pronounced bitter chocolate character sexed up by flowers and fresh herbs. Compared to the estate's flagship cabernet, this one finishes with softer, finer-grained tannin and more early appeal.

I was blown away by the 2006 Roberta's Reserve State Lane Vineyard, which was even better from bottle than it was from barrel. Sadly, there are only 250 cases of this amazing Merlot-based effort (94% Merlot and 6% Cabernet Franc). Prodigious aromas of melted chocolate, licorice, espresso roast, black cherries, black currants, and underlying floral and forest floor scents are followed by a sensationally concentrated, opulent, rich wine. This amazing Napa Valley tour de force makes a strong argument, particularly when tasted alongside the 2005 and 2007, that there is no better Merlot-based wine being made in California.

Complex and well focused, offering currant and cedar aromas and sleek, tightly wound flavors of black cherry, blueberry and exotic spice. Finishes with firm, dry tannins. Needs time. Merlot and Cabernet Franc

Site Blog: Vinography: A Wine Blog Opaque garnet in the glass, with aromas of espresso, bitter chocolate, and dark fruit, this wine has a texture that makes you want to take your clothes off. Satin textured, sexy black cherry flavors are juicy with beautiful acidity and swirl with complex espresso and earthy flavors for minutes in the mouth. Long into the finish the tannins, smooth as butter, begin to emerge, like the memory of a final caress. 94% Merlot, 6% Cabernet Franc, this is almost unquestionably the best Merlot made in Napa Valley, with a stature likely to get it confused with a First Growth Bordeaux. 265 cases made.

About This Producer

The historic State Lane Vineyard, in the heart of the Napa Valley, was first leased by Beringer Estates in 1972 and was used to launch Beringer's famous Private Reserve Cabernet. The Kapcsandys purchased the property in May, 2000 and in 2001 teamed up with legendary winemaker Helen Turley and her viticulturist husband John Wetlaufer. After careful research, they discovered a unique vineyard with multiple micro-geological conditions and decided to redevelop the vineyard for its utmost potential and produce world-class red wines under the Kapcsandy label. The first two vintages - 2003 and 2004 - were produced by Helen Turley. For 2005 Rob Lawson, the winemaker at Napa Wine Company for the past 16 years, was brought aboard and in 2007, Denis Malbec became the sole winemaking consultant.
