($35) Green-gold. Vibrant citrus and orchard fruit aromas are underscored by dusty minerals, taking on a waxy honeycomb character with air. Juicy pear and dried apple flavors offer moderate concentration and good clarity, picking up nervy minerality on the close. The spicy finish offers good lift and cut, with the honey and apple qualities echoing.

Another beautiful example from the same vineyard is Wells' dry white wine, the 2006 Roussanne James Berry Vineyard. Not much is made, but classic rose petal, marmalade, and honeysuckle notes are all present in this crisp, medium to full-bodied, dry wine with terrific texture and purity.

Clear intense golden hues with slight rim variation. Clean aromas of flinty lemon tart, green apple peel. Dry intense flavors of sour lemon drop mingled with white minerals. Lean and tighter than expected but some characteristic mid-palate weight and a touch of MLF perhaps. Very enjoyable, drink now.

About This Producer

Wells Guthrie is a fervent believer that great wine begins in the vineyard. In pursuit of this, Copain has sought out vineyards with expositions, soil compositions, climates, clones, and rootstock selections capable of producing wines of distinction and singular character.

Copain's winemaking practices aim to express each site's unique qualities. Copain wines are highlighted by lower alcohols, natural vibrant acidity, gentle handling of the fruit and wine, native yeast ferments and minimal use of new oak.
