($35; 70% roussanne, 25% grenache blanc and 5% picpoul) Medium gold. Powerful, exotic aromas suggest honeyed apple and peach, with a suave vanilla component building with air. Round and vaguely sweet orchard fruit flavors are snapped into shape by brisk minerality, which carries into the finish. Suave, deeply flavored and impressively persistent, with the concentration and balance to repay a few years in the cellar.

The 2005 Esprit de Beaucastel Blanc is a combination of 70% Roussanne and the rest mostly Grenache Blanc and a touch of Picpoul that sees no new oak. It reveals classic notes of honeyed marmalade, intense tropical fruits, impressive underlying minerality, and a chalky character in its big, dry, full-throttle personality that is bursting with character as well as intensity.

The nose of this deep golden yellow blend of Roussanne, Grenache Blanc, and Picpoul Blanc barely eeked out aromas of honeyed nectarines and white flowers. Its flavor was similarly reticent, tasting at first of a slightly sweet honey wine. However, it also has an extraordinary minerality and just enough viscosity to coat the tongue and linger on the palate for an extremely long time. The effect of this incredibly long finish is a compounding and eventual strengthening of its flavor to a quite pleasing degree over time, and before you know it - the bottle will be empty and you'll wish you had more. This wine also really shined served with prawns.

100% Cabernet Sauvignon. On the nose it smells like mentholed cherry candies, like cherry Halls. On the palate, it lacks in acidity, flavors, depth. In brief, don't waste your time and money.

Now I was worried that tasting this wine would be like bringing a butter knife to a shotgun fight, but much like the Giants against the Patriots, this guy held his own! Even after the VV, the grace of the Esprit was impressive, as were the generous fig, pecan, melon and beeswax notes that personified the personality of this wine. The Grenache Blanc (25%) and Picpoul (5%) obviously charge this wine w/ much more racy, green apple driven acidity than a pure Roussanne, making a direct comparison between the two difficult (the ?01 Roussanne provided a more interesting side by side experience w/ the VV). The ?05 Esprit is a wonderfully textured, full bodied, crisp white that serves as a terrific homage to the Rhone
