($45) Good bright yellow. Spicy yellow peach and ripe pineapple on the nose. Youthfully tart and rather dry for this wine, with a flavor of pineapple and brisk grapefruity acidity. I find this a bit edgy. Not a great showing for this wine, which spends 15 months on its lees. Twenty percent of the wine is aged in stainless steel barrels, which winemaker Fernandez believes gives "more delicate and high-toned fruit" to the blend.

Production of the non-malolactic, full-throttle Red Shoulder Ranch Chardonnay ranges between 4,500-6,000 cases per year. The 2005 Chardonnay Red Shoulder Ranch reflects this vintage's cooler growing and harvesting temperatures. There are some honeysuckle and tropical fruit notes, but more pear and citrus are evident, and the oak is even less noticeable than in the 2004. This crisp white should drink well for 4-5 years.

Fresh, floral aromatics offer citrus and yellow apple scents. Sleek and balanced, this finishes with a hazelnut note. Drink now through 2010. 6,000 cases made.

Color: Golden straw yellow Nose: Toasty hazelenut, ripe apple and meyer lemon aromas. Palate: Apple and citrus flavors, nutty and strong acidic finish that mellow as the wine was open longer. If drinking, I would decant for 30 minutes or so to mellow out the finish.
