Reviews For This Wine

International Wine Cellar | 90

($170-$180) Good full red-ruby. Very ripe, musky aromas of black plum, currant, menthol, dark chocolate, mocha and meat; less pristine than the 2006 but rather youthfully subdued today. Then lush and fat but not overly sweet in the mouth, with a nice balance between ripe fruit and harmonious acidity. A full, broad wine that builds slowly and lingers on the back end, which features substantial but ripe, round tannins. Can't quite match the young 2006 for vitality, but this is distinctly more exotic, in the style of the year.

Beautiful currant, berry and licorice aromas follow through to a full body, with tar and berry character, fine tannins and a long finish. I was expecting a little more from this, but it's still outstanding.

Site Blog: Unidentified Appellation While my commentary on the 2000 encompasses all that is classic and revered about the 'vintage of the century,? the ?05 unfortunately demonstrates what missing the boat on the ride to greatness is. Perhaps the least aristocratic expression of modern Lalande, a fig, dark plum sauce, bitter chocolate and blackberry loaded experience that becomes a bit disjointed and clipped by intrusive tannins and a modest finish. This wine certainly has outstanding potential, as there is quite a bit of ripe fruit to offset its constitution, but it is neither exciting nor singular, yet it certainly is expensive.

About This Producer

Chateau Pichon Lalande, known as one of the greatest Bordeaux vineyards, has been maintained by the same family for more than 250 years. Located in Pauillac, it was deemed a Second Growth wine estate during Bordeaux Classification of 1855. Its location between the Gironde estuary and the Atlantic Ocean is ideal for growing grapes. These two masses of water help keep the air moving, which reduces the chance of rainfall, while the particular microclimate surrounding the Chateau is relatively dry, allowing the grapes to fully ripen on the vine. The climate, concentration of the grapes, and the blend of 45% Cabernet Sauvignon and 35% Merlot result in wines with exceptional structure and, therefore, great aging potential. Pichon Lalande's second wine is the Reserve de la Comtesse and its third wine is Les Gartieux.
