($160-$325) Good deep red-ruby. Superripe, expressive nose offers black plum, smoke, spices and leather. Denser, sweeter and fatter than the 2006; even more generous and forward today. But this impressively chewy and rich wine also has a powerful underlying spine and plenty of lurking power. Finishes very ripe and very long, with the tannins buried by smoky, minerally soil tones.

I certainly underrated the 2010 Pape Clement from barrel, rating it only 93-95+. (Thank God I put a 'plusâ? there!) Having tasted it four times in Bordeaux, and rating it perfect three times and 99 the fourth time, this final blend of 51% Merlot, 47.5% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 1.5% Petit Verdot is perfection in a bottle. Tipping the scales at 14.5% natural alcohol, there are 8,000 cases of it. Its sublime elegance, the power, the medium to full-bodied texture, the silky tannins, the subtle notes of smoke, lead pencil shavings, black currants, charcoal, camphor, blueberry and cassis fruit are all remarkable. It is a rich, full-throttle wine, but the elegance and the great terroir of Pape Clement come through in abundance. It is slightly more developed and evolved than the 2005 was at a similar point in its evolution, but it certainly needs another 5-7 years to develop further nuances, which it surely will. This wine will last 30-40+ years.

Dark in color, offering wonderful aromas of licorice, berry, fresh tobacco and currant, with Indian spices. Complex and full-bodied, with supersilky tannins that caress every inch of the palate. Long and satisfying. A joy to taste this young wine.

Dark in color with some of the standard Graves aromas of old earth, gravel and fruit and yes, slight smoke/tobacco. Rich flavors of the same aromas with relatively smooth tannins. Still young and will need more time, but based on some of the hype about this wine, I was expecting a little more in terms of fruit and thickness (then again maybe I was more in the mood for a California Cab). Don't get me wrong, this is an excellent wine with nice character, elegance and quite smooth texture. Decanted for 90 minutes and would have benefited from more time had I not been thirsty... enjoyable now but will keep.

Nose: smoke, black fruit, earthy. Taste: Full-bodied, good length, generous, still this very pleasant smoke and earth notes, black fruit jam. Could be drunk now but as potential to age thanks to its tannins.

Mocha; good structure, very nice fruit and approachable. Perhaps not at the Parker-given 98 points, but lovely

A pure elixir of young Pape, with extremely rounded edges and the poise of a Super Bowl quarterback. Deep, concentrated dark fruit is found in the midpalate, with tiers of truffle and smoky graphite notes stretching out on the impressive finish. I headed off to a Pape Clement vertical literally an hour after this tasting and it really put this ?05 in perspective. While the results of the 'progressive er' for Pape for somewhat mixed, I think this effort will easily contend w/ the finest wines made at the Chateau under Bernard Magrez

Plum and blackcurrant and then WOW on the palate, just an incredibly deep, rich, luxurious wine. Unbelievably complex and yet already smooth. What a treat.
