($62) Deep ruby. A deep, youthfully brooding bouquet offers dark cherry, blackcurrant, incense and suave oak spices. Spicy cherry and dark berry flavors show an exotic anise quality and slow-building sweetness. This gently tannic, chewy, extremely persistent wine finishes with echoes of oak spice and floral pastille, not to mention excellent vivacity.

The 2005 Numanthia was aged for 19 months in new French oak. Opaque purple, it has a superb perfume of violets, mineral, wood smoke, blueberry, and blackberry. This leads to a firm, very structured wine with questionable balance. The finish is long but tannic. This is a wine that demands cellaring but purchasing it is a gamble.

Espresso and allspice flavors show oak, but there's plenty of ripe black fruit on the palate. The plush texture is supported by ripe, muscular tannins, and licorice, mineral and graphite notes add complexity.
