($150) Saturated dark ruby to the rim. Utterly compelling, ethereal nose combines black raspberry, white pepper, bacon fat, mocha and dark chocolate. Thick, dense and wonderfully sweet but with terrific acidity giving energy to this remarkably full wine. Finishes with unreal palate-saturating length and verve. Kongsgaard has hit the ball out of the park with his collection of 2005s.

The fabulous 2005 Syrah Hudson Vineyard is even better than it was last year. An incredible dark purple color offers up notes of creosote, subtle charcoal embers, aged beef, fresh beef blood, black currants, sweet cherries, pepper, and tapenade. An incredibly complex, deep, full-bodied Syrah with expressive chocolatey notes in the mouth, this intense Syrah challenges just about every ounce of grey matter between the ears.

Thick unctuous, almost syrupy appearance. Great nose of strawberries and blackberries. True to style on the palate with strawberry, sweet dark fruity jams and firm yet round tannins. Long, long finish, a operatic wine...be ready for a full strong experience if that is what you are looking for. Elegant like Schwarzenegger at a formal state dinner.

Simply overwhelming. I'm not sure my palate is sophisticated enough to even understand everything going on with this wine. It was a amazing sensory experience though. Almost had to set the glass down and step back after each smell and sip

Inky in color. Black Pepper, Game, Meaty, Chocolate on the nose. Meaty, Tobacco, Black Pepper, Mineral in the mouth. Full bodied. Fleshy texture. Long finish. So RP gave this a 98, which is why I bought it. It was not a 98 for me. I can't think of food that it would go good with. When drinking by itself, I would only want a couple of sips before my mouth was overwhelmed. It has a very long, complex finish. I can only hope that it develops into something more. I will try it again in a couple of years, maybe it is a 98 then.

Not only have I jumped on the John Kongsgaard bandwagon over the past week, I've decided to launch a new campaign for him to run for office! Between this otherwordly Syrah and the Roussanne/Viognier blend I enjoyed this past Sunday (much less his delectable Chardonnays), I am well beyond wowed w/ his dynamic talents & exceptional fruit. This was perhaps the most complex synthesis of the Northern Rhone w/ Napa Valley that I've ever experienced. Blockbuster notes of iron, dry aged steak aux poivre, beef blood and cassis jam titillate the senses and are even more revealing in the wine?s massively structured mouthfeel that pumps out the beautifully deep, long flavors w/ monstrous intensity. This wine is a complete home-run and will only get better in the cellar (eh-hem, was brought to us by none other than Robert Dentice- I suggest you invite him to your next offline!)
