International Wine Cellar Author: Stephen Tanzer Issue: Issue 138

Good full medium ruby. Sappy aromas of dark fruits, spicy oak and minerals. Wonderfully juicy and lively on the palate, with floral and mineral elements serving to frame and lift the dark fruit flavors. Very firmly built wine with terrific vinosity and balance. Almost too good for a second wine.

Harlan's second wine, The Maiden, is marvelous in 2005. Ripe, opulent fruit and notes of unsmoked high class cigar tobacco intermixed with creme de cassis, coffee, and asphalt are present in this round, superbly textured, rich, full-bodied, silky, beautifully wrought wine.

A complex mix of herb, tar, currant and black cherry fruit is supple and balanced, ending with a touch of charry oak, but also a tasty core of dark fruit flavors.

I bought an owc three pack at the vineyard last year and put it right in the cellar. Unfortunately this did not live up to my memories and it simply wasn't that great. Tight and slightly acid, ok fruit and an ok nose. This was nothing special and I was quite disappointed relative to what I remembered. That was first tasting of the day on that trip and I read my notes back to double check. Anyhow, this certainly isn't bad but for this bottle at least, it wasn't worth repeating at this price point. Perhaps it will improve with a bit more age.

I managed to hold off (almost) a year before drinking my second bottle. Very good wine. Lots going on here -- red fruit (strawberries and cherries), chocolate, and just a hint of olives. Still a bit tannic, but a nice long finish. It's going to take some willpower to hold off on drinking the last bottle.

Garnet in color. Medium rim variation. Medium legs. Mineral, Black currant (cassis), Blackberry. Very smooth finish, excellent but not sure it was worth the price
