Full bright ruby. A black hole of a nose: cassis, black raspberry, mocha and licorice, with a suggestion of almost roasted fruits. Then utterly palate-saturating, with a distinctly layered texture to the dark fruit and mineral flavors. Impeccably balanced, fresh wine with a spectacular slow-building finish that coats the palate with a flavor of black raspberry. A knockout.

The 2005 Harlan Estate, which is mostly Cabernet Sauvignon with a few of the other Bordeaux varietals blended in, is a brilliant wine, and reminds me of a hypothetical blend of a top Pauillac and a wine such La Mission Haut-Brion from Pessac Leognan. Dense purple in color, with a nose of graphite, smoky embers, creme de cassis, and hints of truffle and underbrush, the wine shows fabulous fruit intensity, full body, sweet, silky tannins, good, vibrant acidity, and a stunning, seamless, long finish that clocks in at about 45-50 seconds.

Dense and earthy, with savory herb, dried currant, spice, mint and cedary oak flavors, all tightly wound, compact and concentrated, yet with a seam of elegance and finesse. Very intense and powerful.

decanted for 1.5 hrs, completely closed. Suggest to let this age for at least 10+ years.

Black / deep red color with perhaps just a tinge of remaining purple. The nose is a combination of smoke, spice and black fruit with a hint of vanilla. On the palate there is good balance of fruit, acid and tannin; there is a richness of flavors, with a moderate to long finish. Tannins should continue to smooth-out over next several years.

Excellent wine, but I would still give it another 2-5 years in the bottle before drinking more. Strong and tight, but the makings of a 95+ wine are there. Great black fruits and delicious tannic finish.

RIP 2005 Harlan... we barely knew ye... This wine was so tight, had such a high tensile strength, and was so packed with Harlan's patent pending black currant, that it was tough to extract any secondary flavors. I tried - boysenberry, bay leaf, thyme, rough sticky tannin. The black currant finish splatters on and holds to the whole back of my throat. Hold for many years.
