First sample, from Bachasson: Peppery raspberry, cherry and cassis scents, with strong spice and mineral notes ("from the granite soil"). Quite sweet. Dardouille (older vines planted on granite and clay): Rounder than the Bachasson, with sweet cassis and blackberry qualities and excellent density. The finished blend should be outstanding.

The 2005 St.-Joseph is deeper than the 2006, with more pepper, black cherry, and raspberry scents intermixed with loamy soil nuances. Medium-bodied with beautiful fruit and, surprisingly for the vintage, ripe tannins, it will drink well for 7-8 years.

Packed, but also superracy and refined, with silky, fine-grained tannins carrying lots of blackberry, hoisin sauce, licorice and black tea notes. The long finish really lets the iron note sing. A beauty.
