($45; 44% mourvedre, 26% grenache, 25% syrah and 5% counoise) Dark red. Exotically perfumed aromas of smoky cherry and dark berries complicated by black cardamom, violet and tobacco. Chewy dark fruit flavors flesh out with air but maintain focus, gaining a candied licorice quality on the close. Refuses to let go of the palate but is in no way sloppy. On the contrary: this displays outstanding energy and brilliant mineral lift.

We finished off the tasting with small verticals of their Esprit de Beaucastel and Panoplie. From a warm vintage, the 2005 Esprit de Beaucastel is drop-dead gorgeous! Oozing notions of saddle leather, currants, cherries and smoked meats, it is fully resolved and supple on the palate, with full-bodied richness and depth. I seem to score this wine higher each time I taste it (tasted twice in 2009 and rated 93 and 94 points) and while it's in the middle of its drink window, it should hold for a number of years. Drink now-2020.

After many years, this wine is finally coming into its own and ready to drink with decanting. Deep reddish-purple in color with a nose of fresh raspberries, strawberry cordial, licorice, and ginger root. The beautifully complex palate expresses luscious blackberry and blueberry fruit, violet, clove, and frankincense notes as well as chewy tannins and a luscious minerality. An exceptional effort from Tablas Creek.
