($1; 100-$1,400) Full ruby-red. Explosive, superripe aromas of black raspberry, currant, graphite and tobacco leaf. Outsized, opulent and generous; this big boy saturates the entire mouth. There's an almost exotic character to the plum and cedar flavors. Spreads out impressively on the back end, coating the palate with ripe tannins. The 2006 is at once finer and more powerful, with more noble tannins, but this is more opulent.

This wine was included to give a context. A blend of Cabernet, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot.Attractive sweet oak spice and char over a lovely fresh cassis fruit aroma, with a very slight meaty note. Toasty flavours over fine-grained, rich tannins but a bit flat on the mid palate; needs time to take on flesh.  (JH)

The 2005 Mouton Rothschild will have to take a back seat to the prodigious 2006, but administrator Philippe Dalhuin deserves considerable credit for pushing Mouton to higher quality levels over recent years. A blend of 85% Cabernet Sauvignon and the rest mostly Merlot, the dark purple-hued 2005 exhibits a restrained but promising nose of cedar, tobacco leaf, creme de cassis, and toasty oak. Full-bodied, tannic, and extremely backward, with the vintage's tell-tale acidity, it appears to be even more closed in the bottle than it was from barrel. It does possess a long finish and multilayered mouthfeel. This is an undeniably outstanding, yet restrained, shy wine for a Mouton Rothschild.

Dark purple black in color. Complex aromas of mineral, licorice, lead pencil and blackberry follow through to a full body, with ultrafine tannins and a caressing, pretty finish. Has a lovely texture. Shows elegance and refinement.

About This Producer


Chateau Mouton-Rothschild is a First Growth Bordeaux estate located in the village of Paulliac. The chateau was originally known as Chateau Brane-Mouton while in the possession of the Barons de Brane, but was given its current name by Nathaniel de Rothschild in 1853. The current owner is Philippine de Rothschild, Nathaniel's great-great granddaughter. Mouton-Rothschild is known for being the first estate to initiate complete chateau-bottling in 1924 and for being the only estate from the 1855 classification to be reclassified (upgraded to First Growth in 1973). Mouton's bottles are unique in that each label is designed by a famous artist of the day. This feature makes Mouton-Rothschild especially attractive to collectors. Not to be confused with the grand vin, Mouton also makes a generic Bordeaux called Mouton Cadet, which is dramatically lower in price and highly distributed. The estate also produces a dry Bordeaux Blanc called Ailes d'Argent.

Chateau Mouton-Rothschild is made from a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Petit Verdot, with annual production varying between 20-25,000 cases. The vineyards are comprised of gravel on a subsoil of marl and clay. Mouton is one of the last Medoc estates to ferment its wine in oak vats. Maturation is done in new oak casks. Mouton is a complex wine with an exotic character and powerful tannins. The bouquet features black currants, cedar, pencil lead, licorice, and spice. Younger vintages appear opaque or deep purple, while older vintages tend to show more garnet. Some of the best vintages of Mouton-Rothschild include 1945, 1953, 1982, 1986, 1995, 1989 and 2002.
