A blend of 75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 22% Merlot, and 3% Cabernet Franc, the dense ruby-hued 2005 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate boasts a sweet nose of incense, toast, charcoal, and red as well as black fruits. Elegant with a first class Bordeaux-like structure, moderate tannin, and outstanding purity and length, it will benefit from 2-4 years of bottle age, and should drink well for 15-20. Atypically restrained and subtle for a California Cabernet, this cuvee comes from a mountain vineyard, and it possesses a totally different texture than one normally finds in Napa Cabernets.

Much better than the last. Good cab nose and flavors and for low $20s it beats out many over $50 napa wines.

About This Producer

Mount Eden Vineyards is a small historic wine estate located on a 2000-foot peak in the Santa Cruz Mountain Appellation about 15 miles from the Pacific Ocean. Founded in 1945, it focuses on small lots of estate Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and Cabernet Sauvignon. Planted in austere, infertile Franciscan shale on a cool, exposed mountaintop, the low-yielding estate vineyards have produced world class wines for over a half century.

Since 1981 Jeffrey Patterson has guided the winemaking and grape growing at Mount Eden. His emphasis is on wine growing rather than winemaking, and an obsession with gentleness and naturalness in the handling of the grapes and wines is his ongoing passion.
